Internet på tåget? Njae…

Jag sitter på tåget mellan Stockholm och Göteborg och eftersom jag åker första klass ingår “internet ombord”. Jättebra idé men tjänsten verkar tyvärr inte riktigt redo än. Om jag hade åkt andra klass (vilket jag nästan alltid gör) och betalat hutlösa 109 kr för att få tillgång internet genom tågets trådlösa nätverk hade jag inte varit glad.

Det går faktiskt långsammare att ladda webbsidor över SJ:s uppkoppling än över GPRS.

SJ får dock pluspoäng för att konduktören omgående letade upp en ledig plats med elutag när jag frågade efter det. El är trots allt viktigare än uppkoppling.

Konstig chokladlag

Jag stötte på en konstig lag i dag när jag skulle ha tag på lagen om bostadsbidrag. När jag bläddrade under “B” på Rättsnätet fick jag syn på (den numera upphävda) lagen om avgift vid införsel av vissa bakverk. Denna lag stadgade bland annat följande.

1§ Införs till landet rån (wafers), söta kex och småkakor som innehåller choklad och är hänförliga till tulltaxenr 19.05 tulltaxelagen (1987:1068), skall särskild avgift erläggas till staten. Avgiften erläggs till tullmyndigheten. Tullagen (1987:1065) gäller i fråga om avgiften.

Första stycket gäller inte sådana rån (wafers), söta kex eller småkakor som är skattepliktiga enligt lagen (1941:251) om särskild varuskatt. Lag (1987:1235).

Man kan ju fråga sig vad som var anledningen till denna detaljreglering. Man kan i och för sig gå tillbaka till förarbetena (tex Prop. 1968:99) och se efter om man orkar.

2 § stadgade i alla fall att man minsann var tvungen att erlägga en avgift om 5 kronor per kilogram choklad som ingick i varan.

Jag är trött. Det kanske bara är därför jag tycker detta är så roligt?

Send Me to Brazil

Creative Commons has launched a fund raising campaign to support this year’s iCommons Summit in Brazil. The only way I can get there is if someone else pays (last year I got a full scholarship) so please consider donating.

Here’s the group picture from the iCommons Summit at Harvard 2005. I must admit that I don’t remember all the names but for most people in that photo, I could name the country they’re from!

The summit is a really good way to get to know people from the other CC teams. Before last year’s summit, I didn’t know anyone. Since last year, we have had a visit from CC Japan, web design help from CC Chile (Thanks Claudio! I hope I’ll have time to actually use your files soon.) and we’re planning a joint project with CC South Africa.

And, of course, it’s fun. You get to drink beer with famous law professors and see things like the infamous pool incident live.

Good CC News from Spain

The Creative Commons blog reports that a disco bar in Spain that plays only CC music has won in court against the Spanish collecting society Sociedad General de Autores y Editores (“SGAE”). SGAE had demanded royalties but the bar argued that they only played CC music. And they won! In theory I don’t see how the case could have ended in any oter way but it’s still good to have a precedent like this. The collecting societies might have to modify their approach (”You play music. Pay us money.”) if more people start playing CC music.

Sommartid var för svårt för banken

Skandiabankens datorer klarade inte av omställningen till sommartid och som ett resultat av detta gick det under flera timmar på söndagen inte att betala med Skandiabankens bankkort.

Själv skulle jag köpa en tågbiljett på morgonen och surfade in på www.sj.se. Där möttes jag dock av en sida som informerade mig om att sidan inte var tillgänglig… Under morgonen verkade de få igång sidan mer och mer och efter någon timme kom jag ända fram till betalningen innan det tog stopp. Eftersom sidan krånglat innan antog jag naturligtvis att felet låg hos SJ och traskade ner till stationen för att köpa en biljett i deras automat i stället. När även detta misslyckades ringde jag till slut Skandiabanken och fick beskedet att deras system inte klarat omställningen till sommartid och att det därför inte gick att betala med deras kort! Damen i telefonen hoppades att problemet skulle vara löst inom ett par minuter, men det var det inte. Jag gick in på Hemköp och köpte frukost på vägen hem och där tvingades mannen före mig i kön lämna sina varor eftersom hans kort inte fungerade (själv hade jag lyckligtvis kontanter). När jag kom hem kunde jag fortfarande inte betala min tågbiljett. Till slut ringde jag min far, som har en annan bank, och vi betalade min biljett på hans kort. När Skandiabankens system till slut kom igång vet jag inte. Men de slösade bort hela min morgon.:evil:

Dutch Court Upholds Creative Commons License

A Dutch court has ruled that photos made available on flickr under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license may not be reproduced in a weekly magazine without permission. Sounds pretty obvious, but anyway. Full text (in Dutch).

Wired on Swedish Pirates

Wired writes about the Swedish file sharing debate. The article is well written, much better than most Swedish articles. But this bit is just hilarious:

So influential is Piratbyrån that Sweden’s leading anti-piracy organization defines itself by its opposition to the group. The MPAA-funded Svenska Antipiratbyrån uses its own software to keep logs and track IP address of suspected file sharers.

Back to work

I’m on the train again . . . This time on my way back to work after spending the weekend at home. I can’t help thinking about some CC-licensed (I think) song I heard around Christmas, “Everything’s dead pretty when it snows”. It doesn’t snow today. The sun shines brightly but there’s lots of snow and Sweden looks absolutely beautiful as the train rushes through it. I wish I was on my way to a winter holiday instad of rushing between two town centers.

Going home

*yawn*

I am writing this on the train home after my first (short) week at my new job. These are just a few random thoughts really . . . First, I still don’t have a permanent place to sleep down there, which is kind of annoying. As a consequence, I don’t have internet access, except at work (where I am, after all, supposed to work). Hopefully, I’ll find a nice small and cheap flat with broadband soon . . . The job seems OK. The people are nice and i like the atmosphere at the office (even though I have to share an improvised “office” created by putting two book shelves as a “wall” between our desks and the busy corridor. The environment is more relaxed than I expected (having read Tingsnotarien). I am also almost disapointed that no one seems to have noticed my long hair. Not a single comment in three days! Then again, people seem to wear ties at random and yesterday I noticed that one of the judges was wearing sandals (he wore a tie, though). The actual work seems OK and I expect to learn a lot. The cases at this kind of court are not really the kind I am interested in, though. It’s mainly taxes, revoked driving licenses and disputes related to the social security system. Still, it seems highly educational, and I get paid. Once I get more permanent internet access down there (or at least get my Palm back from repair) blogging might get back to normal. War walking through the blizzards with a laptop did not seem feasible.
