IPNytt.se, which I co-author, seems to have been hacked. I suppose I should be outraged but I found it rather funny. ;-)

The New York Times on Grokster and the Information Exchange

August 30, 2004 at 19:43 | Tags: IP, English | No Comments

Again via Boing Boing, I found this interesting New York Times editorial (Bugmenot required) about the Grokster case and its implications.

This decision [MGM v. Grokster] does not make illegal file-sharing legal. But it implicitly raises a question central to most copyright battles. Is society better served by restricting or even prohibiting new technologies to protect the rights of copyright owners or is there a greater good in the widest possible exchange of information? The resolution lies somewhere in the middle. Finding it, as the court acknowledges, is properly left to Congress.

Propagandaporr

Boing Boing tipsar om Page 3 - Model Propaganda: The Sun, The Girls, The Truth som analyserar “uttalanden” av tidningen The Suns “Page 3 girls”.

Texas, barbarernas hemland?

August 26, 2004 at 23:59 | Tags: off topic, Åsikter, Swedish | No Comments

August 26, 2004 at 23:47 | Tags: Juridik, Swedish | No Comments

FBI Raids on P2P

August 26, 2004 at 23:20 | Tags: IP, English | No Comments

The BBC reports that US agents have raided five homes across America as part of the first federal criminal copyright action taken against file-sharing networks. The people targeted in the raids were believed to have operated Direct Connect hubs.

The BBC article has some interesting language. It talks about “illegal sharing”. They are probably correct but I think the term “sharing” illuminates the absurdity of the situation. What kind of society would prohibit sharing? Surely, sharing is something that the world needs more of?

The article also quotes US Attorney General John Ashcroft saying “We do not believe it is appropriate for the Department of Justice to stand by while such theft is taking place”.

I am not familiar with the inner workings of the DC network but this raid seems inconsistent with the recent Grokster decision.

Update: The Washington Post has more Ashcroft quotes:

Today’s actions send an important message to those who steal over the Internet . . . The Department of Justice is committed to enforcing intellectual property laws, and we will pursue those who steal copyrighted materials even when they try to hide behind the false anonymity of peer-to-peer networks.
